What makes this show unique? It’s not JUST a The Shadows or JUST a Cliff Richard tribute but a combination of the two!
This combination two hour spectacular features all the classics from the early Cliff Richard era sung by well known, gold selling, Afrikaans artist Jacques de Coning . De Coning comments on the question posed wether it is difficult bridging from Afrikaans to English: “You must remember that I am not only well aquanted with the language as I was brought up in a very English town namely Port Elizabeth, but I played most of these songs in pubs for years. My parents were Cliff fans and thus, automatically I was hooked from a young age…”
The show features Cliff classics like:
WHEN THE GIRL IN YOUR ARMS, SUMMER HOLIDAY, LIVING DOLL, GEE WIZZ IT’S YOU, 40 DAYS, DO YOU WANNA DANCE, THE YOUNG ONES, LUCKY LIPS, I COULD EASILY FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU, ON THE BEACH, DANCING SHOES, BACHELOR BOY and MOVE IT.
De Coning blends well with the sapphires and speaks both English and Afrikaans if required when addressing the audience and while establishing audience participation. This show appeals to all audiences & all age groups….
After being announced by the golden voice of one of countries top radio announcers, The Sapphires open the show with a Shadows number or two. The golden voice gives guidance from one song to the next whilst divulging titbits of background information on Cliff & The Shadows.
The members of the band are brilliant instrumentalists, lead by Peter Ross (Hank B. Marvin) and the following classics from the early Shadows era can be expected:
The band does all the moves as The Shadows did….
If you close your eyes you would ask yourself how the Shadows could ever have sounded this good?
A WORD FROM THE SAPPHIRES:
There is no doubt that THE SHADOWS have been the most successful instrumental group ever to emerge from Great Britain The fact that they can still fill huge venues to capacity after 50 years says it all.
Fascinating too, is the fact that to-day you will find the grandchildren of the original fans in the audience at a SHADOWS concert! This would seem to illustrate the quality and wide appeal of their music.
It is also significant that the great ERIC CLAPTON and MARK KNOPFLER are among the thousands of guitar players’ worldwide who have been influenced by HANK MARVIN and THE SHADOWS
Some of the members of THE SAPPHIRES have been playing many of THE SHADOWS tunes for as long as THE SHADOWS have and it is perhaps for this reason that it was suggested that we embark on the daunting task of staging this tribute. And, after many requests produced this CD of the Show, warts and all.
Daunting because in our humble opinion there is no-one alive who could “do it” quite like Hank and the Boys, and those who have followed their music over the years will know that THE SHADOWS themselves produced many different versions, live and recorded, of the well-known tunes, and have produced a variety of “SHADOWS” sounds.
With all this in mind, we have selected the versions of the tunes that appeal to us and have even mixed different versions within the same tunes in our own interpretations. We are now also including some of the up-dated versions that Hank is playing on his current tours. For this we make no apology and feel it may even add another dimension of some fans’ perception of ‘THE SHADOWS’ sound.
The CLIFF RICHARD dimension was added later, as we felt it would broaden the appeal of the show. Again, only Cliff Richard sounds quite like Cliff, so we leave the interpretation to our vocalist, and adhere to authentic versions of the songs, even if it is a mixture of versions.
And so we invite you to place yourselves under some kind of self-hypnosis and join us down “NOSTALGIA STREET” at the LONDON PALLADIUM ……… or wherever, while we give it our best shot.
As a practice run for their cd launch Jacques de Coning and The Sapphires played to a packed Barnyard Theatre in Plettenberg Bay , with an audience of which many commented that they could not wait for the cd to hit the shops.
The Shadows & Cliff Richard tribute album was launched @ Die Danskraal in Port Elizabeth in front of a packed house in and the band had to come back with numerous encores. The owner of Die Danskraal mr. Jacques van Lil had this to say: “We received numerous phonecalls after the show of people raving about the show and wanting us to run it again.
