Colletts – Thursday December 29, 2011
The Colletts – two handsome guys who are taking the pop-classic genre to a new level!
Born prematurely and incubated for several weeks – the doctors expected the Collett-twins to pass away within a month. They didn’t. Armed with her tape player and cassettes of Pavarotti, Simon and Garfunkel and Pink Floyd , their mother spent her days playing them her favourite songs. Nursing them, with the notes of Bryan Adams and Etta James floating through the halls of the paediatric ward. Their survival was pure miracle.
Their deep-etched love for music started with those first notes in the NICU. Constantly surrounded by music throughout their lives – it is no surprise that they’ve just recorded and released their self-titled debut album. They are a classically influenced duo with a cheeky streak of pop that delivers passionate harmonies – best described as pop-classic. Their repertoire includes evergreen hits from Simon & Garfunkel, Josh Groban and Brandi Carlisle.
Although only 19-years old, Bertus & Beyers already have quite impressive resumes. They took 1st and 2nd place respectively at the IMTA ( International Modelling and Talent Association ) held in New York in 2010. Previous winners include Eva Longoria, Ashton Kutcher, Katie Holmes, Brandon Routh and Elijah Wood.
They have been selected to be the opening act for Boney M on their national tour in December 2011. In their short time performing, they’ve made the rounds at national arts festivals Aardlop and KKNK . They were also part of the popular Kersfees Skouspel where they performed alongside Elvis Blue and are regular faces at the Huisgenoot ATKV stages across the country.
Production of the album was done by Larry Pullen – known for his work with Nataniël and Wasserfal.
The album is a collection of popular adult contemporary tracks, traditional Afrikaans adaptations and classical compositions. “Al lê Die Berge Nog So Blou” featuring multi- SAMA-award winning flautist Wouter Kellerman, “Nessun Dorma”, “Ave Maria”, “The Story” as well as a translated version of Snow Patrols’ “Chasing Cars” are but a few of the musical treasures on the album.
The album is fresh and crisp and manages to remain stylish and classy without being pretentious when it comes to the adaptations of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bright Eyes” and Josh Groban’s “Remember When It Rained”. The album is diverse in its technicality and the Twins prove their worth with their rendition of the hugely popular Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s “What A Wonderful World” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.
