ROBIN AULD

Familiar to South Africans through hits such as All of woman, Love Kills and Baby you been good , Capetonian Robin Aulds music has evolved from the pop sound of his early recordings into the contemporary mix of blues, African and Celtic that makes up his sound today. He has released 12 albums and had numerous radio hits in South Africa including two number ones. Many of SAs top musicians have played with him over the years from members of Freshly Ground to Johnny Clegg, and he has done double bills at events like the Grahamstown festival with artists such as Valiant Swart, Koos Kombuis and Louis Mhlanga.

Hes performed and recorded in New York, London, Nashville and played events like Womad, the Cambridge Folk Festival, and Belladrum in the Scottish highlands .

The beach and surfing were a large part of his early career and he considered becoming a pro surfer at one stage. A sideman guitarist in various Cape Town line-ups first, he learned to play the guitar by listening to Hendrix and Neil Young, as well as the various guitarists of Southern Africa.

Now based in the UK, recently he played at the London Forum opening for Johnny Clegg, and played support for Texan artist Michelle Shocked on a UK tour. He has also been playing solo shows at various top UK arts centres and theatres, and is currently rehearsing a trio project with former members of Van Morrison and Jethro Tull.

Robin’s acoustic show features humorous stories of his time in the SA industry,

such as what it’s like to follow Patricia Lewis on stage in Bloemfontein! The musical element of the show is energetic, soulful and upbeat, featuring his original guitar playing, bluesy harmonica, soulful vocals and a pounding right foot! For the show at Potters Place on Friday the 5 th Feb, Robin will be accompanied by local PE lad and master percussionist John Dicken.

A genuine and unaffected flowing together of cultural strands..and, unlike a lot of singer-songwriters you can, hell you should, play this loud. Unpeeled UK.

Sunkissed and generous of melody . Whisperin and hollerin Ireland.

Meltdown, ambient and sublime . Tasty UK.

SILVER JEWELLERY WORKSHOP

Design and create your own silver ring or pendant using the ancient Lost Wax technique. A show workshop will be held at Potters Place on Saturday, 20 February 2010, from 9:00 to 12:00. Artist Eddie Wenman will be teaching guests this age old Chinese technique of crafting and designing silver items.

Eddie moved from Johannesburg to Jeffreys Bay 10 years ago, after being taught by famous jewellery designer and winner of various De Beers awards, Lientjie van Zyl. Here in our beautiful town, Eddie kept himself busy with designing and making of silver, as well as pewter jewellery and cutlery – very similar to the items that Carol Boyes are famous for. He also held a Pewter casting workshop during 2009.

Another interesting fact is that Eddies grandfather was the first mayor of Jeffreys Bay and his house is still standing in Woltemade Street.

Bookings to join the workshop can be made at Potters Place, 042-293 2500. The cost involved is R350 per person, excluding the silver.
