Radio Kalahari Orkes
Sedert
Radio Kalahari Orkes
(RKO) se bekendstelling in 2005 KKNK,
is so wydverspreid soos hulle musiek. Afrikaans, Engels, swart, Capies... almal
RKO was n treffer by Oppikoppi en Innibos.
By die KKNK het mense agter hulle
aangeloop van vertoning na vertoning. In Pretoria was elke optrede van RKO weke
vooruit volbespreek.
instrumente sluit in kitare, banjos, mandolien, mondfluitjie, kazoo,
RADIO
KALAHARI ORKES
A hundred years
behind the times, but still capable of blasting you onto the dance floor
The Radio Kalahari Orchestra --
properly known as the Radio Kalahari Orkes or just RKO -- made its debut at the
KKNK back in 2005 and has been winning hearts and minds ever since, spawning a
genre generally known as Noveau Boeremusiek and touching (or at least amusing)
almost every sector of the Afrikaan-speaking community, from teenage hipsters to
their parents and even grand-parents.
RKO was a huge hit at the most
recent Oppikippi and Innibos festivals. At the KKNK, crowds followed them from
stage to stage. In Pretoria, their live appearances are booked out weeks in
advance. Their most recent video, the ribald Blaas Jou Vuvuzela, featuring
rapper Jack Parow, went viral on YouTube earlier this year, wracking up 70,000
hits in a week or two. This is about as hot as it gets in Afrikaans music.
The orkes is fronted by legendary
stoepsitter and raconteur, Ian Roberts, who sings, tells jokes, plays the
bekfluit and dances the occasional jig. His sidemen perform on what Ian calls
plaasgereedskap, or farm implements-- oldtime fiddles, consertina, banjo, kazoo,
pennywhistle and acoustic guitars. The band s slogan is, A hundred years behind
the times, but still on track.
RKO s music is uniquely and
authentically South African, with influences ranging from thirties Boeremusiek
to goema, maskanda and American country & western (filtered via Bapsfontein and
Springbok Radio.) Lyrics tend towards witty dissection of contemporary local
dilemmas like underperforming rugby teams, affirmative action and crime, as in
the immortal, As die kar nog daar is. (If the car s still there...)
RKO is produced by film maker Dan
Roberts, who roped in his buddy Rian Malan to help with the writing and
associated provocations. The boys first outing, Stoomradio, went gold in 2005.
Next came Die Nagloper (the night walker,) a tribute to hellraising 1930s
boeremusiek rebel Dawie de Lange. Their latest CD, Heuningland, received rave
reviews in the Afrikaans press and is presently available in good music stores.
So put on your dancing shoes,
because RKO s coming your way.

Wie
is
Glaskas?
